Spatial Channel Characteristics for Macro- and Microcellular BS Installations

We investigate the different dominant propagation mechanisms in an urban macroand microcellular base station (BS) installation with a special focus on the application of smart antennas by means of adaptive antenna array measurements. We demonstrate that the congruence of the geometrical mobile station (MS) position and the dominant direction of arrival is only fulfilled for macrocellular BS installations. In microcells the propagation situation is different. There, street canyons play a significant role in mobile radio propagation in contrast to the macrocellular case, where over rooftop propagation prevails. This behavior has to be taken into account in system level simulations of adaptive antenna BS systems. Moreover, the different dominant propagation phenomena will strongly effect adaptive antenna operation for varying BS antenna heights.
